Grants: Introduction

Over the past two years, we have learned so much about the challenges that women face as they work toward the goal of financial independence. It has often been said that to truly understand someone else’s life, we should “walk a mile in her shoes.” The members of the Grants Committee have really taken this saying to heart, visiting the organizations that serve women and girls to learn about the barriers they must overcome to reach financial stability and independence.

We know that women may face domestic violence; or struggle to find safe and reliable transportation to work, or worry every day about child care for their children. They may find the means to overcome one problem, only to face another one right on its heels. We learned that with a little help on several fronts—women in these very difficult situations could reach financial stability and independence.

We also learned that giving girls the opportunity to develop new skills and explore non-traditional careers gives them the confidence to reach high. Throughout this process, we developed a deeper understanding of the real life barriers women face as they work to provide safe, nurturing environments for their children, and achieve a level of financial security.

To truly make a difference in the lives of women and girls, we know that significant investments of time, talent, and resources are needed. Fortunately, we live in a community where there are many caring people, including our own Founding 500 members, who believe in the power of giving back to make a difference.

We received several excellent grant applications, and considered each one carefully. We looked for those programs that used collaboration to overcome the multiple challenges women and girls face. And, we asked our applicants to think about the root causes of financial instability, not just the symptoms.

"How wonderful it is that nobody need wait a single moment before starting to improve the world."
-- Anne Frank
